PREGNANCY RELATED SKIN PROBLEMS
Pregnancy-related skin issues can be classified into three types: hormone-related, preexisting, and pregnancy-specific. Normal pregnant hormone changes can result in benign skin conditions such as striae gravidarum (stretch marks), and hair, nail, and vascular alterations. Nearly all women experience some sort of hyperpigmentation during pregnancy.
Preexisting skin diseases (for example, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, fungal infections) can change during pregnancy. Pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy, prurigo of pregnancy, intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, pemphigoid gestationis, impetigo herpetiformis, and pruritic folliculitis of pregnancy are all pregnancy-specific skin diseases.
Most of these skin conditions will clear up after the baby’s birth. If they don’t go away there are treatments available. Remember to avoid self-medication during pregnancy without consulting your doctor.
